The announcement is not a surprise due to its link to the support of Oracle forms. From what I hear, the surprise is that it includes all administrative modules. Many people expected this would only impact the Financial Aid module.

If you are a Banner 8 customer and have not started the planning, now is the time to start. Have you assessed the technology impacts to your implementation? The obvious impact is requirement to eliminate any mods in your system. Do you know the impact of this change? It is not just a technology decision, but also a process decision. Modifications were put into the system for a reason, hopefully a good reason. Analyzing the modifications should be one of the first steps. If you do not have a good understanding of your modifications, the good news is that Ellucian has tools/services to help you identify modifications and their impact.

For many organizations, this will be a difficult upgrade and I think some organizations have taken the denial approach. Even though they can see the value, organizations are already stretched and view the upgrade and the effort to upgrade does not address many of the strategic objectives of the organization. Ellucian has defined packages of services to assist with the conversion based on the organization’s approach and need. Evaluating the amount of assistance that will be needed is a good first step for the technology organization.

Regardless of your situation, it is time to start the planning process and the development of your upgrade roadmap. In our opinion, the upgrade will take effort and the organization should look at ways to capture additional value. Instead of just eliminating the modification, now would be a good time to revisit your implementation. Many of these systems were implemented years ago. In addition to the new capabilities in Banner, the organization’s needs and requirements may have changed. Take advantage of the update to ensure the capabilities of Banner are maximized and the non-standard processes minimized. This can be an opportunity to the increase the value of your technology.
